Is A ‘Joker Origin’ Movie Really Necessary?

DC comics has introduced some of the most iconic villains to the comic book universe. Be it Superman’s arch nemesis Lex Luthor or Flash’s ultimate foe Reverse Flash. But one name always stands out of the list – The Joker. The Dark Knight’s biggest enemy has been a fan favorite for years now. Some fans even love Joker more than the Batman himself.

Over the years, a lot of different actors have tried to portray the clown prince of Gotham. Heath Ledger’s performance in the Dark Knight is still considered to be the top portrayal though. The latest addition to the long list of actors is Jared Leto, who’s performance in Suicide Squad got him mixed reviews. But fans are about to get another portrayal on big screen now.

Warner Bros.’ recently announced that a new Joker origins film is in development. The story will revolve around The Joker himself and will also talk about his life as a kid. With the DCEU still riding high off Wonder Woman‘s success and looking forward to a Joss Whedon-assisted Justice League in the fall, the studio has made the surprising move to create DC films outside of it’s already established shared universe. The studio plans to begin with a Joker origin film making it a project to keep an eye on, as it will star a new actor in the role, be directed by Todd Phillips, and supposedly produced by Martin Scorsese.

The real question arises here is that do we actually need a Joker Origin story? One of the things that makes Joker such a great villain is that he has no backstory. A backstory means a motive or a reason to commit crimes but Joker doesn’t need that. He just wants to watch the world burn. (The Dark Knight Reference). The mystery surrounding him makes the character so dark and convincing. A look into his past would definitely change that. Also, deviating from the comics could prove disastrous for Warner Bros.’ (as seen in Batman V Superman with Lex Luthor)

The all-new origin story is believed to take place in the 1980s, and be “a gritty and grounded hard-boiled crime film”. As is usually the case with rumors, a new one recently lined up with this assessment, and also managed to tease a look far back into Joker’s past.

Joker is currently in development and does not have a release date.
