Matt Reeves Explains How The Riddler, Penguin and Catwoman Will Be A Part Of The Batman

The Batman

WB just released the teaser for The Batman at DC FanDome, and it is safe to say that Pattinson haters will change their opinion after today. The trailer shows a darker version of Batman, battling not just thugs this time, but also his inner demons. The film will feature Robert Pattinson as the dark knight himself, with Paul Dano playing the role of the main villain, The Riddler.

The trailer also gave us the first look at the some other villains in the movie, namely Zoe Kravitz’s Catwoman and Colin Farrell as The Penguin. With so many villains in the first installment, one question that one might ask is : How will so many villains work in a single film? During the Panel at DC FanDome, Matt Reeves was kind enough to answer these questions. He stressed that The Batman is a mystery thriller that follows the Caped Crusader trying to solve crimes, and meets various villains along the way.

“It’s actually in a weird way the origins of a lot of our Rogues Gallery characters. Selina isn’t Catwoman yet, that’s actually part of the journey. Oz is not yet the kingpin that he’s going to become, he’s The Penguin and in fact doesn’t like being called The Penguin. And The Riddler is just emerging for the first time.”

Reeves also explained how he wanted to bring something new to the screen through his versions of the characters.

“Paul Dano plays a version of The Riddler that no one has ever seen before. He’s such an incredibly creative actor, so what he’s doing I think is going to blow peoples’ minds. And then to have Zoe Kravitz, her iteration of Selina Kyle – to me that’s incredibly exciting. You have an iteration that you’ve never seen of what she’s doing, but it touches on all of these iconic things that people know from the comics. It’s always about trying to square what you know with what also is new, and that is really part of the exciting process of making a Batman movie which is to find a way to make it your own, and to find a way for the actors to make it their own, and yet still connect all of these things so people go, ‘Oh that’s my Selina. I know who that is.

By the sound of it, Reeves’ The Batman will finally give us a detective story the iconic superhero deserves, while keeping the dark tone that Batman deserves. We for one cannot wait for it to come out. Let us know what you think of the trailer in the comments below.
