Why Thor : Ragnarok Is An Important Movie For Thor

Marvel has been riding high with its cinematic universe for quite some time now. While their solo movies have been a hit (Iron Man, Spiderman, Doctor Strange, Guardians of the Galaxy, Captain America),their team-ups have taken most of the limelight. Perhaps the most anticipated movie of this decade, Avengers : Infinity War is set to release next year. Between the Infinity War and the current universe timeline rests the story of the Asgardian God, Thor.

Thor : Ragnarok is the third movie in Thor’s solo franchise. While Thor has been an important part of Avengers, his solo movies have been frowned upon by the fans. But that might not be the case anymore. Thor : Ragnarok is set to release this November and here why it is an important one for the norse god.

It Will Restart Thor’s Movie Series

It’s not secret that Thor’s previous two movies in its franchise have been disappointing. While fans called the previous two to be a romantic comedy on Marvel’s part, the third one in the series might be the one fans have been dying to see. Thor : Ragnarok’s director, Taika Waititi has ensured that this movie will change things for good. He explained:

I think the main challenge, for me, was actually working at getting away from the other two films. And again… Yes, the other films are there, and it’s great to watch them. I think they’re good films. But I don’t mind if people start with this film. In my mind, for me, this is is my ‘Thor 1.’

I’ve seen the other films, and I respect them a lot. But I can’t spend too much time thinking about this as a threequel. Because then I’ll get tied up too much in respecting what went before, and respecting what’s going to come after. It just, for me, has to be a standalone thing. Because this could be the only time I do this. And I just want to make it a version of a Marvel film in the best way possible.

The previous two movies will always be there for fans to see, but the goal for Taika Waititi is to set Ragnarok as the only movie Thor’s fans have to see.

It Will Explain His Time During Civil War

While the Earth’s mightiest heroes were busy fighting among themselves, Thor was doing a much more important work. At the end of Age of Ultron, Thor set out to find the Infinity Stones and the evil conquorer Thanos. It’s a journey that has spanned “years” since, and when Ragnarok begins, audiences will understand why Thor missed Marvel’s Civil War.

During Screenrant’s recent visit to the set of Thor : Ragnarok, producer Brad Winderbaum explained why the whole Hulk involvement and the battle with Surtur is more complicated than one would think.

The journey he’s been on at the beginning of this movie, it’s not like five minutes after Ultron ends we start this movie: it’s a couple years later. And as we know, at the end of Ultron he’s started this quest to find the puppet master, and the Infinity Stones, and all that. What he realized really fast– I don’t think I’m giving too much away because it’s right at the top of the film, but basically that one quest, that universe-ending peril that he was trying to figure out dovetailed or branched off into any number of universe ending-perils that he’s been adventuring on for the two years leading up to the beginning of this film.

That pretty much answers why Thor wasn’t a part of Civil War. The man was busy saving the universe while the Avengers were busy tearing themselves apart.

Thor Will Finally Become The King Of Asgard

When Thor was introduced to the fans in his origins film, he was on his way to become the King of Asgard. Three movies later, he’s still not the king. Originally shown as immature and hot headed, Thor has come a long way and Ragnarok will be the proof of that.

According to the director, Ragnarok will leave Thor a changed man. To lead a nation, one must be worthy of it and that’s exactly what Thor will become by the end of Ragnarok. While the Goddess of Death, Hela will destroy Asgard to pieces, it seems like Thor would be the only Asgardian left to take the mantle of the king. From the looks of it, Thor ascending to the throne might be just what is needed to bring an end to Ragnarok.

While Thor : Ragnarok might be perhaps the most important story for Thor till date, it is sure to be a bridge between the current Marvel Cinematic Universe and Infinity War. How the events of Ragnarok prove to be a part of Infinity War still remains to be seen.
