Star Wars is one of the biggest franchises in the world right now. With fans throughout the world, Star Wars has a large fanbase, and with such a large fanbase, there are always fan theories. The upcoming movie for Lucasfilms, Star Wars : Episode VIII is titled the Last Jedi and fans were speculating who the Last Jedi was. And now, we know.
During a recent interview with The New York Times, Rian Johnson revealed that the title actually came from the opening crawl of The Force Awakens, and that it refers to none other than Luke Skywalker. He said:
“It’s in the opening crawl of ‘The Force Awakens.’ Luke Skywalker, right now, is the last Jedi. There’s always wiggle room in these movies — everything is from a certain point of view — but coming into our story, he is the actual last of the Jedi. And he’s removed himself and is alone on this island, for reasons unknown.”
When the title “The Last Jedi” was revealed this year, theories started coming that it referred to both Luke Skywalker and Rey since “Jedi” can be both plural and singular. but of course, the film will have another Jedi by the end of it since Luke is going to train Rey. It is hard to tell if Luke is going to be a major part of the remaining two movies or if he will just train Rey. But considering that the title, The Last Jedi refers to Luke, he might be instrumental in the upcoming movie.
