Jeep came to India with two very pricey imports, the Grand Cherokee and the Wrangler, which couldn’t make their mark in the Indian market. However, now jeep has brought in a new SUV the Compass which has been specially designed for India and is being manufactured there too which means they can offer a competitive price for their new entrant. The car has been launched in India and is being offered at a base price of 14.95 lakhs ex-showroom Delhi.

Exterior

The Compass looks like a baby Grand Cherokee, which isn’t bad at all. The car looks very sharp on the outside with all its cuts and creases, the car looks like a tough and rugged SUV with its large and squared wheel arches and with all the sharp lines on the bonnet, the traditional seven slated grille just makes the car look bolder. The headlights of the Compass come with day time running LEDs and projector head lamps.

The wheels of the Compass could’ve been a size bigger, apart from that, the shark fin d-pillar and the way in which the roof drops towards the rear makes it look like a Range Rover Evoque. The ground clearance just like the other jeeps is huge.  This jeep comes with a contrasting black roof.

Projeto 551 JEEP

The rear of the Compass is well designed and looks very up market, the wrap around LED tail lamps look unique and the company says that they have been inspired from Iron Man. Overall, the Compass is a well designed vehicle on the outside and looks unique.

Interior

Because of the high ground clearance, the floor of the jeep is very high which makes it a step up while getting into the cabin. The quality of the interior is top notch which wasn’t expected for the price it comes at. The seat leather is premium and looks like It has been borrowed from a much more expensive car.

Everything inside the jeep looks and feels luxury, but it also has its drawbacks, like the touchscreen isn’t too big and doesn’t function well either. The instrument cluster is well laid out with sharp and crisp dials. Although practicality might be an issue with very less storage spaces.

The cabin is best suited for four passengers, the space in the front is great with good leg and shoulder room, the leg and head room in the back is great too, but a fifth passenger might be a bit tight. The back seat passengers get a USB charger and a pair of air vents but the air flow of the vents cannot be controlled. All in all it provides a great backseat experience and premium looking interior. It has a decent size boot 400lts to be precise and take in 2 big suitcases and couple of small bags easily, the space can be increased to 700lts by flipping the rear down.

Engine and Transmission

It has two engine and transmission options one a 2lt diesel which makes 170bhp and other a 1.4lt petrol which churns out 160bhp, while the petrol variants are available with a 6 speed manual and a 7 speed automatic transmission, the diesel variants are only available with the 6 speed manual. However, a 9 speed automatic transmission for the diesel variants is expected to be launched in January 2018.

It’s not an all-time 4 wheel drive vehicle but whenever there’s an obstacle you choose 4 wheel drive lock or put it in one of the terrain modes.

What’s missing

The compass is a great vehicle but there are certain features that are missing on the compass, even as an option like, automatic headlamps, rain sensing wipers, a sunroof and an auto diming rear view mirror.
