The DCEU has been a mess according to the critics so far. While only Wonder Woman got the thumbs up from the critics, all four movies (Man of Steel, Batman V Superman, Suicide Squad and Wonder Woman) were financially successful. While the studio kickstarted their universe with Man of Steel’s loose follow-up Batman V Superman, Suicide Squad released after Snyder’s film. Suicide Squad introduced some of the fan favorites from DC comics to big screen (Deadshot, Harley Quinn and Captain Boomerang among others)

Suicide Squad, directed by David Ayer was not received well by both critics and fans. Then WB reported a sequel is in development and David Ayer was removed from the director’s chair. Now Warner Bros. has tapped Gavin O’Connor to write and direct the sequel. Variety is reporting Gavin O’Connor (The Accountant, Warrior) is officially on board to write Suicide Squad 2, with an eye for him to direct the sequel as well.

Variety also reported that the film will begin production by the end of 2017, which would mean that the film would be ready for a 2019/2020 release date. The studio was searching for a director for some time now, with names of Mel Gibson(Hacksaw Ridge),  Jaume Collet-Serra (The Shallows), Jonathan Levine (Warm Bodies), and Daniel Espinosa (Safe House) in the bag. However, O’Connor’s name was also in the mix and now, he is officially going to write and direct the movie.

Of course, the question now arises if O’Connor can improve upon the foundation laid by David Ayer. David Ayer’s movie was called as a mess by many and it remains to be seen if Warner Bros’ and Gavin O’Connor together, can make a sequel that would surpass the mess Ayer created.
