Everything You Need To Know Before Reading Dark Nights: Metal

Dark Nights

DC is gearing up for another ambitious Batman project. Titled, “Dark Nights: Metal” the comic arc promises to bring something that has never been shows before. This mini-series will reunite the creative team of New 52 and will be introduce a new Universe called the The Dark Multiverse. If you’re not updated with the recent Rebirth comic book arc, fear not. We’ve got you covered.

1. What is Dark Multiverse?

The New 52 series made it familiar to the regular DC fans that there are a total of 52 alternate universe, each of which contains an alternate version of Earth with minor differences. The Earth that we are concerned with is referred to as Earth-0 or new Earth. Now the Dark Universe is something that exists out of these 52 universes and is exactly what Batman is looking for.

This Multiverse is the version where evil has spread from world to world. Obviously, the Justice League tries to make contact with the multiverse and while they try to look for answers, they come in conflict with a group of 7 villains known as the Dark Knights. Now here comes the fun part. Each villain is a twisted version of its Earth-0 counterpart. The lineup includes The Murder Machine (Cyborg), The Red Death (Flash), The Devastator (Doomsday), The Merciless (Ares), The Drowned (Aquaman), The Dawnbreaker (Green Lantern) and the Batman Who Laughs (Joker).

It is not known if this series will affect DC in the way Crisis on Infinite Earth and Flashpoint Paradox did in the past. But it is safe to assume that this arc will definitely change Batman is some way.

2. Why it is an important arc for DC?

The writers are perhaps what change a comic. This arc will see the creative team of DC’s New 52 reuniting once again to bring it to the fans. The team includes writer Scott Snyder, artist Greg Capullo, inker Jonathan Glapion and colorist FCO Plascencia. This will be the first time Snyder and Capullo have worked together since Batman #50 in early 2016. Snyder told IGN,

“You always try to take into consideration that there’s going to be a good number of people who have never read the book before or read any DC comic before. When you get to Metal, the idea is that if you’ve read nothing else, you’ll still be okay. It’s not like you’ll have to have read our run on Batman – me and Greg – or you’ll have to have read [the prologue issues] The Forge and The Casting.”

3. Why the name ‘Metal’?

Some fans might think that the name Metal has no significance to it but we’re here to tell you, that is not the case. The series is basically a superhero themed Metal album, one that strives to be epic. The cover of Dark Nights : Metal#1 flaunts the Justice League arranged to form the “sign of the horns,”. But that’s not the case, the story will deal with an ancient mystery. A mystery that involves Thanagarians. And where there’s Thanagarians, there’s Nth Metal. The comics will not only involve Batman and the Justice League but also Hawkman and Hawkgirl, who will try to understand the true nature of Nth Metal and the source of the power it contains.

Metal also centers around several powerful, supernaturally charged minerals in DC lore such as Dionesium (the substance that resurrected Batman and Joker after their climactic battle in Snyder and Capullo’s Batman run), Electrum (the substance the Court of owls uses to create its undead Talon assassins) and Nth Metal itself. As we’ve learned in the prologue issues Dark Days: The Forge #1 and Dark Days: the Casting #1, these minerals are all variations of the same core metal, a substance that funnels dark power into the DC Universe from another realm.

There, you have it. Everything you need to know about before you start reading this epic arc. There will be a lot of tie-ins so don’t worry about the crossovers. Basically, if you enjoy the adventurous, daring tone of Dc, this one is definitely for you.
